The Aspire Medical Group Clinical Preceptorship Program aims to provide a high-quality clinical experience for current Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) students. The clinical practicum is a critical component that fulfills the requirements for graduation and prepares students for professional success in the field of mental health care.
During the preceptorship, students will have the opportunity to work closely with our lead psychiatric nurse practitioner Betty Yu, who will provide individualized guidance and mentorship. This close collaboration ensures that students develop the necessary clinical knowledge and assessment skills required to deliver excellent mental health care and achieve professional success.
Clinical practicums form a crucial element of nursing education, serving as a bridge that links academic theory to real-life healthcare scenarios. These immersive experiences enable students to translate their didactic education into clinical practice, gain hands-on experience while fostering the development of novel clinical skills.
In essence, the Aspire Medical Group Clinical Preceptorship Program presents an invaluable platform for PMHNP students to acquire experiential knowledge. This program offers more than just practical training; it provides students the opportunity to gain insights from seasoned practitioners. Furthermore, it equips them with the requisite skills to excel in their impending careers the mental health care sector.
*It’s important to note that the program is conducted entirely on-site, and telehealth is not an option. This ensures that students have direct, in-person exposure to the clinical environment and can engage in face-to-face interactions with patients and the healthcare team.

ADHD, Ketamine Evaluations & all new patients requiring CONTROLLED medications require an in-office evaluation for their first appointment. Telehealth is an option for follow-up appointments.
Through hands-on training and in the classroom, our students are continually learning to improve both their careers and the care they provide. In order to provide a robust learning experience, we limit the number of students each semester.
Students are encouraged to apply early.
During the clinical practicum, students will be supervised by an ANCC Board-Certified PMHNP. Students will perform both in-person and telehealth encounters to build practical experience as they perform psychiatric comprehensive mental health evaluations, develop differential diagnosis based on the patient’s chief complaint, complete psychiatric interviews and progress notes, develop psychiatric mental health care plans, recommend pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions, and follow-up with the patient to assess their response to treatment and monitor for side effects of the prescribed medications.
At Aspire Medical Group, we frequently utilize long-acting injectables in our clinical practice; therefore students will be expected to achieve proficiency in the administration of long-acting injectables.
Our preceptors dedicate a lot of time to scheduling and rearranging their own schedules to provide the optimal learning experience for their students. They also coordinate with the university and the student, fill out paperwork, and make sure students meet all the requirements during their clinical rotations.
Per semester/quarter, we require a clinical preceptor honorarium from students requesting clinical hours.
Please note that we do not offer psychotherapy at this time, hence, this clinical rotation will not fulfill this requirement.
Students interested in our preceptorship program should submit the required information listed below to our Medical Director, Betty Yu, at the following email address: byu@aspiremedgroup.com
She will review the materials and contact you directly.

Initial psychiatric evaluation appointments are 45 minutes to 1 hour long.
Most follow-up sessions are 20-30 minutes, but they may be scheduled for longer to best serve the needs of the individual patient.
A review of your psychiatric history, presenting symptoms, current medications, and lifestyle will be discussed during the initial psychiatric evaluation. The provider will gather the required documentation to adequately assess, diagnose, and treat the patient.
The patient will be given treatment recommendations and discuss potential side effects, efficacy, and duration of treatment. The provider will develop a treatment plan that best suits the needs of the patient. The patient has the right to refuse treatment or inquire about alternative treatment options. If it is outside the scope of our practice or a higher level of care is warranted, we will provide referrals to a provider or facility that can better serve your needs.
Most follow-ups occur between 1 week to 2 months. Rarely, 3-month appointments are scheduled for patients (usually only for established patients that have been stable on medication for a prolonged period of time).
The frequency of appointments varies depending on the complexity and case of the individual patient. Prescriptions are filled up until the next scheduled appointment. Patients are responsible for contacting the office if a refill is needed.
Please do not contact providers directly outside of office hours.
A Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) is a certified advanced practice nurse that specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of mental illness and psychological problems. Some providers also offer primary therapy services.
In this setting, the PMHNPs primary role would be to recommend, prescribe, and manage medications when appropriate and review the risks, benefits, and alternatives to medications. When appropriate, the PMHNP would order and review labs. PMHNPs primarily provide medication management and, occasionally, supportive therapy. Oftentimes, patients would also work with a therapist for therapy sessions. We have a relationship with several area therapists and can provide referrals to established patients.
Our providers are available for in-person and telehealth consultations.
Online sessions allow you to see a provider from the safety of your home, at a time that is most convenient for you, through our easy scheduling platform.
